The Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) Phase 5 is a framework for coupled atmospheric-ocean climate modeling contrasting different GCM models. Coupled modeling is used for predicting climate change, and CMIP5 provides guidelines and experimental design framework for such modeling.
The CMIP5 framework is designed to provide context for assessing feedback loops, predictability of models, and range of model feedback. It includes guidelines for both short- and long-term simulations, as well as “atmosphere-only” models.
